The role of leadership in Nigeria development trajectory, 1999-2023

This study analyzed the role of leadership role in Nigeria development trajectory from 1999 to 2023. This study adopted the empirical, survey and descriptive approach. This study made use of both primary sources and secondary sources of data. The primary source was obtained from a structured questionnaire. While the secondary source were obtained from the office of federal Civil service commission, National Bureau of Statistics, and Central Bank of Nigeria. Findings revealed that that there is a significant relationship between leadership role and Nigeria Development trajectory from 1999 to 2023, that eight critical criteria are used in recruitment and promotion into leadership role in Nigeria Public service namely sex, age, religion, state of origin, medical fitness, character, minimum qualification, free criminal record and examination. Of the eight criteria pillars, four items were consider critical in promotion into leadership role in Nigeria pubic service namely Sex, Age, Religion and State of origin popularly refer to as federal character policy and that implementation of Singapore meritocracy, pragmatism and honesty principle in leadership role will influence Nigeria development trajectory. The study recommends the implementation of legal frameworks that would eliminate mediocrity and enforce meritocracy in selection and appointment into leadership role in Nigeria Public Service Commission.
